EquiMap began as a research question: if you overlaid every public service location in Australia with the ABS SEIFA index, what would you actually find? We expected the answer to confirm the common assumption, that modest communities would consistently sit furthest from services.
The real data surprised us. Our first live analysis, 361 Greater Sydney communities with all 335 Fire & Rescue NSW stations, found the opposite of the textbook pattern: the most modest areas averaged just 1.67 km to a station, while the genuine coverage gaps were on the premium semi-rural fringe (Bilpin, Dural, Galston). In rural Australia the pattern reverses again. The lesson was clear: coverage equity is contextual, and you cannot assume its direction, you have to measure it.
That is exactly why a purpose-built platform is needed. Our team had been working separately across geospatial analytics, transport modelling and AI when we came together in 2025 to build the tool that would let planners, policy-makers and decision-makers, in government and beyond, measure coverage equity directly, on real open data.
We brought our first MVP live in May 2026, built on real Fire & Rescue NSW open data, and quickly extended it to GP access nationally. We are now expanding to multi-service coverage across more states, and actively seeking co-investment and agency partners.
